Functional activities require a combination of positioning (proprioceptive) ability, flexibility and strength.
- Standing, walking and swimming usually requires more movement into extension than flexion.
- Bending forward to tying shoe laces or sitting requires more movement into flexion.
- Maintaining sustained postures in areas of impairment will be painful
Movement Maps and Movement Zones help to develop an awareness of movement and position of the back during or prior to activity. Performing movements in areas of impairment, or maintaining a position in an area of impairment will increase symptoms.
